How to Avoid Heart Disease

I was reading an article by Lisa Nelson, RD and she did a great job of explaining, at a very easy to understand level, the basic things you must do to help avoid heart disease.

First of all, knowing your cholesterol numbers is important. Are your triglycerides high? Or is it your LDL number?

As Lisa says, if it’s triglycerides then you should consume less alcohol and sugar. If it’s your LDL level that’s high you should consume less saturated fat.

If you have inflammation, which is determined by a different test than a cholesterol test, then you should eat more antioxidants. Things such as fruit and vegetables will help. Also reduce your intake of sugar, refined grains, and trans fat.

Increase your intake of anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids such as fish, especially salmon, nuts and flaxseed. You can also supplement your diet with fish oil.

Here’s a link to Lisa’s article.
